Focus and Scope

JSBOH publishes research on the Bioeconomy-Health Nexus, understood as a four-mechanism adaptive system. A manuscript is in scope only if it demonstrates, empirically or analytically, a traceable causal or functional linkage between at least two of the four mechanisms below. The unit of analysis is always the system; any single mechanism is a variable within it, never a standalone subject of inquiry:

1. Biological & Agricultural Production Mechanisms

Governs the ecological, agronomic, and biological input capacity of the Nexus: soil-system health, climate-adaptive production, crop and livestock management, and food-system biosecurity, evaluated strictly for their traceable effect on downstream economic value, food-safety exposure, or population health outcomes. Agronomic findings with no demonstrated downstream effect fall outside scope.

2. Economic & Management Circulation Mechanisms

Governs how biological output is converted into economic value, risk is distributed, and institutions are managed across the system: agribusiness risk management, agricultural and health economics, circular-economy value chains, healthcare and pharmaceutical business models, and the regulatory-economic instruments (health law, bio-governance, pharmaceutical regulation) that constrain and enable circulation. Regulatory and legal analysis is admitted only insofar as it functions as an economic-management instrument within the Nexus, not as doctrinal commentary. Market or governance analysis with no demonstrated link to biological or health mechanisms falls outside scope.

3. Health & Clinical Maintenance Mechanisms

Governs how the Nexus sustains population, clinical, and nutritional health as both output of, and input to, the wider system: public health management, clinical and dental health systems, pharmaceutical and clinical pharmacy practice, and nutritional science, evaluated for their upstream dependence on production or economic mechanisms and their downstream effect on system resilience. Isolated clinical case studies with no system-level implication fall outside scope.

4. Digital & Social Infrastructure Mechanisms

Governs how information systems and human/social capital jointly determine the adaptive and learning capacity of the Nexus: computational infrastructure (artificial intelligence, blockchain, IoT, big data) as the system's operational nervous system, and workforce capacity-building, professional education, and social-organizational structures within health and agricultural institutions as its adaptive learning capacity. Pure algorithmic development or pure educational-theory contributions with no traced effect on the biological, economic, or health mechanisms fall outside scope.

Editorial Position. The Nexus is treated as a single, unified system of inquiry. Submissions are evaluated on the strength, specificity, and traceability of the mechanism-to-mechanism linkage they establish never on breadth of subject matter, disciplinary origin, or topical novelty in isolation. A paper advances the field only if it improves understanding of how the Nexus functions as a whole.

Desk-Rejection Clause (Strengthened). Manuscripts confined to a single, isolated mechanism will be desk-rejected without external review. This includes, without limitation: standalone agronomic or biological studies with no traced economic or health outcome; standalone market, financial, or legal analysis with no demonstrated biological or health linkage; standalone clinical case reports, nutritional studies, or public-health surveys with no system-level implication; and standalone computational, algorithmic, or educational-pedagogical work with no traced effect on production, economic, or health mechanisms. Authors must, in the manuscript's introduction, explicitly (a) name the two or more mechanisms of the Bioeconomy-Health Nexus implicated by the study, and (b) state the specific empirical or analytical evidence demonstrating their interaction. Manuscripts lacking this explicit mechanism-linkage statement will be returned to the corresponding author prior to any editorial assignment and will not enter the review queue until resubmitted in compliant form.
